Multimodal Literacy

Literacy is the process in which students make meaning with the world around them. Over the course of your child's kindergarten year, they will be exploring literacy through the following modalities: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and visual representation. Your child will be engaging in different modalities simultaneously to construct meaning, the idea of multimodal literacy.

Why the Multimodal

 Literacy Framework?

Your child is entering into school in the 21st century era. This means that your child needs an education that going to provide them with 21st century skills. We are beyond the time where literacy is only one modality at a time. With the increase capabilities of technology, students are engaging in multiple modalities throughout their educational day. It is important to provide this framework and skills to your child so they can learn to be productive, empowering members in our global society as they progress through life. Kindergarten is just the start to that vision.

Digital Storytelling

Due to technology, students are able to explore learning through multiple modalities. Here I have included a multimodal project called Digital Storytelling. Digital Storytelling is a great resource to use in the classroom because students are engaging in multiple modalities at once when creating their own story or listening to another. With this project, students can be as expressive as they want, engaging in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing all while creating a story that is meaningful to them. The project engages students in a learning that requires deeper levels of thinking and expression. Students will enjoy learning through this format, challenging them but yet offering learning that is rewarding at the end. I made a digital storytelling video about the app Seesaw that we use daily in our classroom. The video will teach you about the app while showing you the benefits to this great framework called Multimodal literacy
